Official Andijon Death Toll Rises To 187
11 July 2005 -- An Uzbek prosecutor today said that the death toll from the May violence in eastern Uzbekistan has risen to 187.
Earlier today, a delegation of foreign diplomats toured Andijon at the invitation of the Uzbek government. The group included representatives from Russia, China, Iran, India, Pakistan, and Central Asian states.
Human rights advocates say up to 750 people were killed in the government crackdown in Andijon.
President Islam Karimov blames the violence on Islamic radicals.
Western countries have called for an international probe into the violence, but Karimov refuses, assenting only to the monitoring of Tashkent's own probe.
