BAE Systems Opens MicroIR® Products Manufacturing Facility in Lexington

22 Jun 2005 | Ref. 048-2005

LEXINGTON, Massachusetts -- BAE Systems officially opened its new 31,000-square-foot MicroIR® Products Manufacturing Facility today at its Infrared Imaging Systems facility, Five Forbes Road, Lexington, Mass.

Within three years, the MicroIR® Products Manufacturing Facility expects to produce more than 32,000 infrared (IR) modules and 9,000 weapon sights and camera systems each year, more than double the present rate. The modules are produced for a variety of customers including the armed forces and first responders. Eventual capacity in this facility could be even higher after 2008 through multi-shifting and product/process/equipment improvements.

“The opening of this facility reflects BAE Systems’ commitment to furthering employment opportunities in the Commonwealth,” said Suzanne Daniels, BAE Systems' director of business development in Lexington.

BAE Systems' uncooled MicroIR® technology converts the heat (IR energy) from the scene of interest into a real-time video image, allowing the user to “see” through darkness, smoke and other common obscurants. This technology is at the core of IRIS military and commercial products, such as the Thermal Weapon Sight II and Stryker Thermal Imaging Modules, as well as a variety of commercial MicroIR® products.

Steve Jamison, BAE Systems' vice president and general manager, said, “This new facility will greatly increase our ability to meet the current and future needs of our war fighters by providing thermal weapon sights with enhanced targeting capabilities and superior real-time imagery that will give them the advantage under difficult battlefield conditions.”
