Maoists kill eight people, free 66 prisoners

The Maoist fighters recent attack against a government headquarters in an eastern district Sunday night left at least, eight dead, it was reported here Tuesday.
The fighters set ablaze government offices in the town of Diktel in eastern Nepal's Khotang district, about 200 km from Kathmandu, on Sunday night and freed 66 prisoners after a harsh gun battle which lasted over five hours.
The death toll stood at eight, including three fighters, so far, said the army headquarters in Kathmandu but there is a fear that the number would increase later.
Media said that fighters also looted medicines from a medical shop apparently, in order to use them for their injured forces.
In a previous attack, they killed 38 people and injured 71 two weeks ago in a bombing on a passenger bus but said later that the attack was made by mistake.
Rebel violence has escalated since King Gyanendra seized direct control in Nepal in February.
The Maoist insurgency has left more than 11,500 dead over nine years.
