USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD 6), At Sea (NNS) -- USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) (BHR) pulled into Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, May 25 for a three-day port visit on the return leg of its 2004-2005 Western Pacific deployment.
“Hawaii is a beautiful place to visit,” said Capt. J. Scott Jones, commanding officer of the San Diego-based ship. “BHR has raised the bar for big decks on this deployment. I know the crew enjoyed their liberty in this beautiful state. They have earned it.”
Among the various activities available in Pearl Harbor, many BHR Sailors visited the USS Arizona memorial.
According to Lithographer’s Mate 2nd Class Matthew Brown, a Kansas City, Mo., native, visiting USS Arizona on Memorial Day weekend made it extra special.
“Visiting the memorial gave me a great feeling of pride. There is a long-standing Navy tradition on this island, and especially in Pearl Harbor, and it is great to be a part of that,” said Brown. “Being here this weekend just adds to that. Everybody from veterans to Hawaiian natives have been thanking me for my service to my country.”
Many Sailors from BHR took advantage of the ship’s and Naval Station Pearl Harbor’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) discounted ticket program for tours and attractions all over the island, including golfing, surfing and tours.
Before BHR pulled away from the pier in Pearl Harbor, the amphibious assault ship embarked 321 tigers (service members' friends and family) for the final leg of the of the journey home, called a Tiger cruise.
