Operation Spear continues near Karabilah
CAMP BLUE DIAMOND, RAMADI, Iraq – Marines, Sailors and Soldiers from Regimental Combat Team-2, 2nd Marine Division and Iraqi security forces continued conducting Operation Spear in and around the city of Karabilah, June 18.
The operation's objectives, to root out terrorists within the city and deny them the use of Karabilah as a sanctuary, are similar to Operation Matador conducted by Marines May 7-14 in western Al Anbar Province. However, Operation Spear has an increased participation of Iraqi Security Forces and Iraqi soldiers from the 1st Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Brigade.
An Iraqi company and reconnaissance unit, along with Marines came under heavy small arms fire while conducting operations within the city June 17. Iraqi soldiers supported by Marines routed the terrorists without suffering any casualties.
Marines and Iraqi soldiers continued operations through the night securing key objectives in and around the city while conducting presence patrols in order to hamper the terrorist's movement.
While clearing an objective area, Marines and Iraqi soldiers discovered four Iraqi hostages who were beaten, handcuffed and chained to a wall in a bunker located in central Karabilah.
Several small weapons caches were discovered and destroyed. Weapons found included complete mortar system and a number of prefabricated improvised explosive devices.
