India's military supplies to Nepal will upset democratic forces

New Delhi, June 15, IRNA
India-Nepal-Koirala
Former Nepalese prime minister G P Koirala, who is also the leader of the democracy movement in his country, has conveyed to the leadership here that India's military supplies to Nepal will upset democratic forces struggling against the Nepalese monarch.

It is also learnt that the Indian leadership said it fully backed Koirala's position.

India assured the Nepali Congress leader that it would not take any step which would constitute a setback to democratic forces in that country, leaders belonging to the seven political parties, whose combine Koirala heads, said.

Addressing a press conference subsequently, Koirala indirectly conveyed his opposition to resumption of arms supplies.

He said, "We do not want to interfere in the government of India's policy. But whatever policy they formulate, they should keep in mind whether that encourages democratic forces or dictatorial forces." Koirala, who has been the country's longest serving prime minister, also said he was returning home confident and satisfied in the back drop of moral support provided by India.

He said the political combine would now set up its anti-king or pro-democracy movement.

He said he was willing to talk to Maoist leaders as efforts to bring them into the mainstream had to be encouraged.

He wondered why so much "hue and cry" was raised when there was talk of meetings with the Maoist leaders, when the international community including US, UK, EU and India have declared that the crises in Nepal could only be resolved through political and not military means.

"Whoever wants to settle the issue of Maoists should talk to them."
