BAE SYSTEMS Fields Electronic Flight Control System On Aermacchi M-346 Military Trainer

14 Jun 2005

The two Aermacchi M-346 military training aircraft flying at this years Paris Air Show offer pilots carefree handling through a quadruple-redundant fly-by-wire flight control system underpinned by BAE Systems electronic flight control system.

BAE Systems has delivered two sets of the electronic flight control system that includes quad flight control computers, aircraft transducer units, magnetic azimuth detectors, air temperature sensors, integrated multifunctional probes, and pilot interface transducers. The electronic suite provides the aircrafts stability control, g limiting, stall and spin prevention, and adaptability to multiple degrees of automation and autopilot modes.

BAE Systems electronics are part of the flight control system developed in partnership with Teleavio, an Italian company acting as an integrated project team formed by Alenia Aeronautica, Galileo Avionica, and Selenia Communications.

As a leader in fly-by-wire systems for military aircraft ranging from jets to transports, BAE Systems is proud to be a member of the Aermacchi team as a provider of flight-critical electronics, said Sean Bond, the companys vice president of Aerospace Controls. Our electronics are designed to provide smooth, precise manoeuvrability across the full range of mission and flight conditions and have lived up to those expectations during flight testing.

Designed for combat pilot training, the aerodynamic M-346 is manoeuvrable and can be controlled at an angle of attack exceeding 40 degrees. It features a high thrust-to-weight ratio and has demonstrated outstanding field performance, with a take-off run of 400 meters, a landing distance of 520 meters. The aircraft can carry weapons that include bombs, rocket launchers, air-to-air missiles, and air-to-ground missiles.
