DARWIN, Australia (NNS) -- The combat cargo team aboard USS Boxer (LHD 4) embarked Australian landing force personnel, supplies and equipment in Darwin, Australia, June 1 in preparation for exercise Talisman Saber 2005.

While pierside in Darwin, Boxer’s combat cargo personnel loaded Australian army vehicles, including Leopard AS1 main battle tanks and control tracked vehicles. More than 80 Australian soldiers and gear necessary for the support and operation of vehicles were also embarked.

“It takes a lot of talented people from the crew and embarking landing force personnel to complete a task like this,” said Boxer’s Combat Cargo Officer, Marine Chief Warrant Officer Stephen R. Campbell.

In addition to loading Australian units, combat cargo was also responsible for inspecting every piece of equipment that came aboard. The inspection ensured that equipment was mission-capable and that no hazards were present.

While complex in nature, unit loading evolutions such as the one conducted in Darwin are managed by small, dedicated teams of military professionals. Combat cargo is made up of four Marines and one Boxer crew member.

“This is truly a team effort, and team Boxer has proven once again that they are up for the challenge,” Campbell said.

"Being a part of Combat Cargo during Talisman Saber is a great oportunity to see our two countries working together towards one goal," said Culinary Specialist 3rd Class John X. Nebus of Atlanta. "Embarking the Australians on board boxer is a great way to show the world that our two countries work as a cohesive unit."

During Exercise Talisman Saber, more than 16,000 Australian and U.S. personnel will work as a multinational force to prepare for future real world events that may require joint operations.
