New Generation Of Modular Missile Approach Warning System Developed By IAI's Elta Systems Group
Jun 13, 2005
A new generation of modular Missile Approach Warning (MAW) system has been developed by Israel Aircraft Industries' Elta Systems Group (IAI Elta). The system combines passive search and track technology and radar-based target confirmation technology with various types of counter measures, including directive infrared counter measures (DIRCM) to deflect incoming threats.
MAWS searches for potential threats using infrared search & track (IRST) technology. IRST scans for missile infrared signals. Once a threat is detected, it is confirmed by MAWS radar, operated for a very short period of time, and counter measures are automatically activated.
The IRST technology, jointly developed by Elta and IAI's Tamam Division, combined with radar-based target confirmation eliminates potential false alarms by electro-optical MAW systems during low altitude flights such as take-offs and landings.
Israel's government has decided to protect its commercial passenger aircraft using Elta's existing, field proven radar-based MAWS.
Israel Aircraft Industries, Ltd. is a leading manufacturer in the international aerospace and defense community and Israel's largest industrial exporter. IAI's ELTA Systems Group, is one of Israel's leading defense electronics companies and a leader in Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), Early Warning and Control, Home-Land Security (HLS), Self-Protection and Self-Defense and Fire Control applications.
