BAE SYSTEMS Electronic Warfare Contracts In Australia Underline Growing Capability

13 Jun 2005

BAE Systems electronic warfare capability in Australia looks set to grow further with the formalisation of production quantities of radar warning receivers for the F/A-18 Hornet and emerging export opportunities.

The company is currently responding to a Request for Quotation for the production of the ALR-2002 Radar Warning Receivers after it was selected for fitment to the Australian F/A-18 Hornet fleet as part of the Hornet Upgrade Program.

Jim McDowell, chief executive officer for BAE Systems Australia said: “We are delighted with the news. Electronic warfare is a key capability, which we will now be able to develop further to support and protect Australia’s assets. This is an indigenous capability which the Commonwealth is committed to sustaining and developing.”

BAE Systems Australia is also supporting the Electronic Warfare aspects of a pan-BAE Systems bid into the Korean helicopter program.

The developments follows the success of two recent electronic warfare (EW) agreements, worth a combined total of more than A$200m (80m), which underlined BAE Systems Australia’s growing electronic warfare (EW) capability

BAE Systems was awarded a A$120m-plus (50m) contract by the Australian Defence Force to design, integrate and install advanced electronic warfare self-protection systems to their Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters under Project Echidna and saw the selection of ALR-2002 for fitment to the F/A-18 Hornet.

At the time of the contract award Defence Minister Robert Hill said: "The award of the Echidna contracts and the production of the Australian radar warning receiver will cement BAE Systems as Defence's major strategic industry partners for electronic warfare systems."

The early warning radar and electro-optic sensors of the Echidna system will enable the Army to detect threats from anti-aircraft radar guided and infra-red guided missiles, increasing protection and ensuring the safety of the crew, passengers and aircraft. The Echidna systems include the ALR-2002 advanced radar warning receiver.
