BAE SYSTEMS Creates Virtual Battlefield For Hawk
13 Jun 2005
The first virtual Hawk training environment has been created over Warton in Northwest England, as one of BAE Systems' Hawk demonstrator aircraft took to the skies alongside a virtual wingman and two virtual enemy aircraft which were in fact simulators on the ground. This proof of concept demonstration enabled the Hawk advanced jet trainer to participate in a number of differing scenarios during the same mission.
The virtual environment has the ability to create large numbers of virtual and constructive entities including land and sea based targets. This particular demonstration was restricted to a 2v2 air combat mission that consisted of three virtual entities and one airborne aircraft. Missions can be adapted during the flight to introduce new situations and add or remove enemy or allied aircraft.
The system provides the pilot with the necessary displays to recognise these changing situations while maintaining situational awareness. Engineers are working to make the experience as realistic as possible with the inclusion of a specifically designed helmet that allows the pilot to actually see the other aircraft and targets that are created.
Inclusion of this system within a modern fighter training system would have a significant impact.. Student pilots will be able to train in a virtual battlefield, exposing them to real wartime situations in the early stages of training within a safe and cost-effective environment.
‘Currently this type of exercise does not take place until late in the training programme’ says Archie Neil, Flight Operations BAE Systems. ‘By using this system the operational conversion element of pilot training can be brought forward significantly allowing instructors to identify those pilots with the ability to cope with the demanding conditions of warfare’.
