Multi-Million Pound Typhoon Spray Facility Unveiled At BAE SYSTEMS
13 Jun 2005
A multi-million pound paint-spray system for the Typhoon swing-role combat aircraft has been commissioned at the BAE Systems facility in Warton, UK.
The system comprises four computer-controlled 'man-mover' platforms that can be programmed with the profile of an aircraft.
The new system allows Typhoon airframes to be sprayed in a single application – significantly reducing the time taken using existing technology. The new technology will not be restricted to Typhoon, other aircraft produced at BAE Systems will also benefit from this investment.
Each of the platforms is linked by computer to a central processor that is programmed with the profile of the particular aircraft. The platforms will then move to a pre-arranged point on the aircraft and the operators begin spraying.
John Siddall, Project Manager, Facilities Engineering at BAE Systems Warton said: ‘The previous system used traditional scaffolding which had to be moved manually along the aircraft each time a section had been painted. As an aircraft with inherent stealth characteristics, Typhoon requires a special coating that has to be applied in a continuous operation, which the old systems wouldn’t allow.
‘The system has been supplied by REEL of France, which has huge experience in this field and have supplied Airbus with 'man-movers' for the A380. Working in partnership with them we have adapted systems used in the civil aircraft industry to meet our demanding military requirements.’
