Joint Typhoon Training Programme Reaches New Heights
13 Jun 2005
The UK Royal Air Force has achieved a major milestone under the Case White contractor support service programme, achieving the contracted 1040 sorties eight weeks ahead of schedule. The milestone sortie was flown by Squadron Leader Ian Lang from BAE Systems airfield at Warton, UK to RAF Coningsby.
Case White is a partnership between the RAF and BAE Systems which has seen both parties working together to deliver Typhoon entry into RAF service. Both 17 (R) and 29 Squadrons have been based at the BAE Systems Warton site since December 2003. During the18 month period of the partnership, BAE Systems was contracted to provide1300 flying hours (approximately 1040 sorties). In addition, the company is training 166 groundcrew and 24 emergency personnel as well as a further six pilots for the Operational Evaluation Unit (OEU) and 14 for the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU).
The final phase of Case White is progressing well with the beginning of the phased transition of Batch 1 aircraft and equipment from BAE Systems Warton to RAF Coningsby. In line with the contracted requirement, 16 pilots have already completed service instructor pilot training. Training for 29 Squadron groundcrew continues until early July.
The first Batch 2 aircraft have been delivered to the RAF, including the first single seat with a further two currently undergoing acceptance.
Even at this early stage in the aircraft’s service life, Typhoon is delivering exceptional performance. The RAF is currently not only outflying the contracted hours, but has outflown the stretch target by some 15%. The programme has been so successful that 17 (R) Squadron (the first Typhoon Squadron) moved to its permanent operating base at RAF Coningsby 3 months ahead of schedule, with 29 Squadron following at the beginning of July as planned
