NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- Approximately 2,000 Sailors from eight countries began Exercise Shark Hunt 2005 June 7 in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.

The U.S.-led anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercise is a multinational, multiplatform operation designed to enhance theater coalition cooperation between participating nations. It will include air, surface and sub-surface platforms coming together to practice anti-submarine warfare techniques.

Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, Vice Adm. John Stufflebeem, emphasized the benefits of the international engagements.

“Fostering mutual commitments to regional stability and advancing multinational interoperability are invaluable contributions to the international fight against terrorism," he said. "Our goal is to enable a more agile, potent, and technologically advanced international ASW force in theater.”

Conducting operations in two theaters of operation will also exercise the transition of command and control capabilities between theaters and countries. Participating countries include Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom and the United States.
