Terror bunker system destroyed
MAMUDIYAH, Iraq -- Coalition Forces destroyed a bunker system used by terrorists to store huge quantities of munitions June 3 in the Yusafiyah district southwest of Baghdad .
Local residents had informed Iraqi Security Forces and the U.S. military that the site, an old Republican Guard bunker complex, had recently been used to store and protect ordnance used in attacks against Iraqi locals, Iraqi Security Forces and government officials and coalition military forces. After extensive surveillance and civil military operations in the area, Coalition Forces confirmed that no innocent civilians were in the bunker complex area.
Coalition Forces engaged the complex with five high-precision smart-bombs at approximately 6 a.m. June 3. Secondary detonations emanating from inside the complex continued until 12:30 p.m. Officials involved with the targeting decision said these particular munitions were used due to their pin-point accuracy and the desire to eliminate the chance of accidental civilian casualties.
No civilian casualties were reported from this incident.
