KIDNAPPED AL ANBAR GOVERNOR KILLED IN FIGHT WITH TERRORISTS

CAMP BLUE DIAMOND, Iraq – Governor Raja Nawaf Farhan al-Mahalawi, the elected governor of Al Anbar province, was found dead in a house near Rawah on May 29 after foreign fighters in the house fired on Coalition Forces passing through the area. Iraqi Government officials confirmed his death today at a press conference in Baghdad.

Governor Nawaf was kidnapped by terrorists on May 10.

Coalition Forces patrolling northwest Rawah were attacked by foreign fighters at about 3 p.m., May 29. Coalition forces returned fire and witnessed secondary explosions from the house. After a brief gunfight, they entered the building, and found four dead and four injured fighters, along with weapons and improved explosive device materials. One of the injured foreign fighters told Coalition Forces that the governor was still in the building. Soldiers found the deceased governor’s body bound to a gas cylinder and blindfolded.

With the exception of the governor, all the dead and wounded were foreign nationals.

Coalition Forces evacuated the governor’s body from the residence, carried it with dignity and respect aboard coalition aircraft, and returned the remains to the governor’s family this morning in Al Qaim.

The incident is under investigation.
