NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Mobile Security Detachment (MSD) 22 returned home during the Memorial Day weekend in May from a successful six-month deployment after providing force protection for Iraqi oil terminals in the Northern Persian Gulf.

While in theater, Det. 22 was responsible for protecting Iraq’s vital oil infrastructure while assigned to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command.

The detachment, which deployed Nov. 26, is part of Mobile Security Squadron 2, commanded by Cmdr. David W. Somers III. Their mission is to provide 24-hour security on land, in harbors and ocean areas where high-value U.S. assets or Navy ships might anchor or berth.

MSD 22 is based in Portsmouth, Va.
