Lockheed Martin Completes Delivery of First Low-Rate Production Guided MLRS Rockets to the U.S. Army

DALLAS, TX, May 16th, 2005 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has delivered the final 170 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rockets produced under the Low-Rate Initial Production-1 (LRIP-1) contract from the U.S. Army Aviation & Missile Command (AMCOM), at Redstone Arsenal, AL. Work on the contract was performed at Lockheed Martin facilities in Dallas, TX, and Camden, AR. A total of 860 rockets have been delivered to date.

The GMLRS rocket is the latest addition to the MLRS family of munitions. GMLRS is an all-weather, precision-guided rocket that provides increased accuracy thus reducing the number of rockets necessary to defeat current targets by 80 percent, as well as reducing collateral damage.

GMLRS rockets provide increased precision and maneuverability to the battlefield commander, and can be fired from MLRS M270A1 launchers and the HIMARS launcher. GMLRS rockets carry the Dual-Purpose Improved Conventional Munitions (DPICM), which is government-furnished to Lockheed Martin.

“We have applied our know-how with relentless discipline to ensure the best possible precision of GMLRS rockets,” said Ron Abbott, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control’s vice president – Tactical Missiles. “We are responding to the Army’s need for greater accuracy with a precise and comprehensive munition.”

Lockheed Martin is also producing Guided MLRS Unitary rockets, addressing the U.S. Army’s Urgent Need statement requesting a 21-month acceleration for deliveries in this program.

GMLRS Unitary rockets provide maneuver commanders a precision capability while greatly limiting collateral damage in restrictive terrain and urban areas. The Guided Unitary rocket adds another dimension of precision attack to the battlefield commander’s arsenal of MLRS rockets and Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles. The Guided Unitary rocket features a single unitary warhead, enhanced fuzing and an improved rocket motor.

GMLRS is a Future Force system with a modular design intended to incorporate future growth. The system incorporates a GPS-aided inertial guidance package integrated on a product-improved rocket body. Small canards on the guided rocket nose provide basic maneuverability and enhance the accuracy of the system.
