Coalition Forces in Afghanistan Detain Pair After Mortar Attack

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, May 3, 2005 Coalition forces in Afghanistan detained two men carrying what appeared to be a mortar tube on May 2, shortly after five mortar rounds hit near Forward Operating Base Salerno, Combined Forces Command Afghanistan announced today.

"Mortars and rockets are indiscriminate by nature and their use not only puts the lives of coalition forces at risk but lives of innocent Afghans as well," said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jerry O'Hara, Combined Joint Task Force 76 spokesman. "That insurgents would put the lives of the countrymen they claim to represent in jeopardy illustrates how truly desperate they are."

Also, Afghan police arrested a man who confessed to the creation of an improvised explosive device that slightly wounded a U.S. soldier traveling in a convoy in southern Afghanistan on May 2. The convoy was conducting a reconnaissance mission with Canadian military officials.

Police canvassed the neighborhood where the blast occurred and, acting on tips from residents, arrested seven people, one of whom confessed to building the device.
