Unexploded ordnance destroyed in As Sindiyah

TIKRIT, Iraq – Task Force Liberty Soldiers found and destroyed a large amount of unexploded ordnance, or UXO, in As Sindiyah in Diyala Province on May 1. An Iraqi worker who was excavating dirt to build a house in the area alerted a combat patrol from the 278th Regimental Combat Team about the UXO.
Along with Iraqi Army Soldiers, the combat patrol recovered 32 individual 120mm mortars, 19 separate 60mm mortars and four rifle grenades. Explosive ordnance disposal personnel destroyed the munitions. One additional 120mm mortar round was found after the controlled blast and taken to a Coalition Forces base for destruction at a later date.
