Nepal-Former PM
Nepal police early today arrested former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba for alleged involvement in irregularities while in office before King Gyanendra seized power, a spokesman for his party told AFP.
"Police arrested former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba in his residence Wednesday morning around 2:00 am," Minendra Rijal, of the Nepali Congress (Democratic) Party, said.
Deuba, 59, was dismissed along with his coalition government by King Gyanendra, who seized power on February 1.
His arrest follows Deuba's rejection last Wednesday of a summon from a royal commission set up to examine alleged irregularities in a drinking water contract.
"They also cut off the telephone and electric lines in his house before he was taken away forcefully," Rijal said.
The anti-corruption committee has sweeping powers of detention and punishment.
Six other former cabinet ministers have already appeared before the commission, which Deuba has accused of waging a vendetta against pponents of Gyanendra's takeover.
