MARMARIS, Turkey (NNS) -- Approximately 330 U.S. Sailors from the guided-missile destroyer USS Carney (DDG 64) are participating in the first Turkish Marmaris International Maritime Festival here in April.
The spring maritime festival will provide the United States Navy in Europe the opportunity to promote theater security cooperation through pursuit of shared diplomatic goals and military readiness. Opportunities such as this festival stand as time-tested staples of theater relationships and serve as the foundation of future friendships.
Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, Vice Adm. Harry Ulrich cited the importance of these theater security cooperation opportunities.
“Turkey’s Marmaris International Maritime Festival is an invaluable opportunity to foster mutual commitments to regional stability, advance multinational interoperability, and deter potential adversaries,” said Ulrich.
Carney will host Turkish sailors to embark for cross-training and cultural exchange opportunities to improve understanding of each other's capabilities and resources. The training agenda will enhance interoperability and develop military-to-military cooperation between the United States and the embarked countries.
Carney is homeported in Mayport, Fla.
