GAETA, Italy (NNS) -- Sailors from the destroyer USS O’Bannon (DD 987) assisted two crew members aboard a 45-foot fishing vessel in the Mediterranean April 20 at approximately 1 p.m. GMT.

They commenced rescue operations after receiving a distress signal and sighting an emergency flare from the fishing vessel. The rescue operation occurred in international waters off Corsica, France.

O’Bannon deployed a rigid-hull inflatable boat and rescue personnel to the scene, and transferred the Danish crew members from the flooding vessel. Both crew members are in good health aboard O’Bannon.

O’Bannon, homeported in Mayport, Fla., has been deployed to the European theater since December 2004. The ship recently completed Exercise Trident D’Or, a multinational maritime exercise in the Mediterranean Sea, and previously participated in a search-and-rescue exercise with navies from Israel and Turkey in January.
