BAE SYSTEMS Secures Further Order For Its High - Tech Javelin Seeker
20 Apr 2005
BAE Systems Avionics is proud to announce the award of a 3 million follow-on sub-contract from Lockheed Martin to supply additional seekers for Javelin, the state-of-the-art Light Forces Anti-Tank Guided Weapon system.
This order follows the recent main contract order by the Ministry of Defence for additional Javelin missiles for the British Army's Armoured Ground Component (AGC), worth circa 100 million and involving the supply of a number of rounds and command launch units.
BAE Systems Avionics makes the infra red seeker, part of the advanced guidance system for Javelin and has been contracted to supply a further quantity of infra red seekers securing production for Javelin at the company's Basildon site in Essex until the summer of 2006.
The Javelin Weapon system is produced by a joint venture between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin in the USA.
Javelin provides the British Army with the world's most versatile, shoulder launched medium-range anti-tank missile with " fire and forget " infrared technology which has been combat proven - most recently in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is the weapon of choice for rapid reaction, special operations, and light and mechanised infantry forces. Javelin is capable of being used day or night, has a range in excess of 2,500 metres and will enter service this year, replacing the British Army's current Milan system.
Javelin is already in service with the US Army and Marine corps in operations around the world and is also on order from the armed services of several other allied countries.
BAE Systems Avionics has a dedicated Javelin Seeker Manufacturing facility in Basildon which was officially opened by Minister for Defence Procurement Lord Bach in June 2004. The purpose-built Javelin facility includes a custom designed clean room manufacturing cell and a dedicated precision machining cell.
George Dowding, BAE Systems Avionics Programme Manager for Seeker Systems said: "We are delighted to receive this order which we believe demonstrates the strength of our very important international partnership with Raytheon and Lockheed Martin and, in particular, the proven effectiveness of our facility in Basildon which has been supplying the Javelin Joint Venture with high-tech seeker technology since 2003."
