BAE SYSTEMS Awarded New Contract To Supply UK Royal Navy With State Of The Art Thermal Imaging Technology
20 Apr 2005
BAE Systems Avionics has been awarded a contract to supply the UK's Royal Navy with world class, state of the art, thermal imaging technology.
The new contract will see 16 of the MOD's Type 22 and Type 23 Frigates being fitted with the BAE Systems Avionics SiGMA Caveo Camera that will provide leading edge thermal imaging equipment to the Royal Navy.
The first phase of this contract for the supply of the Sigma Thermal Imaging Cameras, valued at 3.054M is in place and an order for the installation and support of same is expected in the near future. The overall contract value is estimated at 6M.
The mid-wave SiGMA camera will deliver enhanced performance for the Royal Navy's surveillance and targeting operations especially in hot and humid climatic conditions. The technology is operationally proven and has already been deployed in the UK and the Far East where its excellent versatility has been well demonstrated.
Designed and produced at the BAE Systems Avionics Basildon site, the high performance camera, known as SiGMA (Sensor Integrated Modular Architecture), provides passive infrared imaging day and night and in poor visibility.
BAE Systems offers world class Thermal Imaging Systems for air, land and naval systems in both military and civilian applications and has the technology and expertise to offer complete solutions in detectors, digital signal processing, optics and software.
Key to SiGMA's success is the high performance digital signal processing electronics designed to readily accommodate a range of detector array sizes and types. At the core of SiGMA's compact, modular design are many features that are easily controlled via a simple serial interface that allows Original Equipment Manufacturers to develop systems in very short timescales with greatly reduced production times.
The SiGMA technology is available in three wavebands (short, medium and long) and can be procured as a complete unit or in modular segments. This provides the versatility to tailor the system to meet specific customer requirements.
Marc Ellis, BAE Systems Avionics Head of Naval and Airborne Campaigns said: "SiGMA cameras provide our customers with versatile and proven capability for surveillance and target acquisition applications in all conditions worldwide. This latest order firmly establishes the SiGMA camera with the UK MOD and we hope it will lead to many more orders not just in the UK but overseas as well."
