Coalition Forces mortar fire damages
mosque in Balad
TIKRIT, Iraq - A Coalition Forces mortar round fell short of its
intended target and damaged a window in a mosque in Balad at about
11:30 a.m. April 17. The Soldiers were test-firing a 120mm mortar
system from a nearby Coalition Forces base when a round fell short,
damaging the surrounding wall to the mosque complex and one window was
damaged by the concussion of the impact.
The Coalition Soldiers immediately stopped firing and a Task Force
Liberty combat patrol went to investigate the impact of the round.
There were no civilian injuries. An investigation into the incident is
underway, as well as coordination with local authorities to arrange
for repair of the damage.
