TWO ATTACKS ON POLICE IN MAKHACHKALA - ONE KILLED, FIVE WOUNDED
MAKHACHKALA, April 13, (RIA Novosti's Dekabr Beibutov) - One policeman was killed and five others wounded as a result of two attacks on police late Tuesday night and Wednesday morning in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan (a republic in the North Caucasus neighbouring on Chechnya), RIA Novosti was told at the duty desk of the city's interior department.
At about 12.20 a.m. Moscow time, a police UAZ car with a road patrol was blown up on the Makhachkala-Airport road under construction.
The incident took place not far from a new overpass 400 meters from the village of Novy Khushet. As a result of the explosion of a caseless explosive device one policeman (the driver) died, and two were injured.
A source in the law enforcement bodies who is now at the scene of the incident told RIA Novosti over the telephone that the yield of the explosion was 8-10 kilograms of TNT equivalent.
A crater 1-1.5 meters deep and 2 meters in diameter was formed at the site of the explosion. The wires from the device are stretching to a nearby brickyard.
A criminal case has been opened on the fact of the incident under the article dealing with "an encroachment on the life of personnel of law enforcement agencies".
The second blast occurred at about 1.00 a.m. Moscow time in Akushinsky Prospekt in Makhachkala, the city's interior department said.
The car that suffered was one of a road patrol from the patrol service of Makhachkala's city interior department. Three policemen received light wounds.
