The United States army is to reduce its troop size from 62,000 to 24,000 over the next five to ten years, the daily Stuttgarter Zeitung quoted US army spokeswoman Elke Herberger as saying on Tuesday.
Furthermore the US army headquarters will be moved from the southwestern city of Heidelberg to Stuttgart which hosts also the command headquarters of the European-based American forces.
Heidelberg has presently four US military headquarters with some 4,000 troops.
The Pentagon plans to withdraw as many as half of the 70,000 soldiers deployed in Germany as part of a major global realignment of American troops.
The secret Pentagon plans envision the creation of smaller military bases in several East European and Central Asian countries.
Germany is a major logistics center for worldwide US military operations.
