RUSSIA REMAINS A STRATEGIC PARTNER FOR KYRGYZSTAN

RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, April 11 (RIA Novosti) - Russia remains a strategic ally and friend of Kyrgyzstan, Roza Otunbayeva, the Kyrgyz foreign minister, said Monday at a meeting with her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

"We have come here to prove the succession of our political course," said Otunbayeva. "Kyrgyzstan remains committed to its earlier agreements. Leaders change, but politics remains."

She assured the Russian foreign minister that the future Kyrgyz leaders would remain committed to developing relations with Russia.

The minister recalled that the Kyrgyz presidential elections had been set for July 10.

As for her first visit to Moscow, Otunbayeva noted that it was "important and landmark." "We are going through a complicated transitional period. However, despite the current problems, the situation is under control," she said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in turn confirmed Russia's willingness to help Kyrgyzstan stabilize the situation inside the country.

"As the president has said, we are ready to assist stabilization efforts in Kyrgyzstan as you request. And we are already doing so. We hope it will help bring stability to Kyrgyzstan," Lavrov said opening the talks.

The Russian minister noted that the visit of the Kyrgyz foreign minister to Moscow was "fairly timely."

"We sincerely sympathize with the events in Kyrgyzstan and want the Kyrgyz people to be able to stabilize the situation," said Lavrov.

He expressed willingness to discuss all the aspects - both the situation in Kyrgyzstan as a whole and the development of a dialogue in bilateral relations and in the context of international affairs.
