BAKU CALLS ON MOSCOW TO TACKLE KARABAKH PROBLEM
BAKU, April 6 (RIA Novosti) - Speaker of Azerbaijan's parliament Murtuz Aleskerov comes out for Russia's proactive participation in the Nagorny Karabakh settlement.
"Azerbaijan strives for restoring, expanding and developing friendship with Russia. We see the rise of bilateral economic and political relations and considerable trade growth. Russia and Azerbaijan are involved in many international projects," Aleskerov said at the meeting with CIS Executive Secretary Vladimir Rushailo on Wednesday.
However, the Armenian-Azeri conflict caused by the problem of Nagorny Karabakh hamper the development of inter-CIS relations, Aleskerov noted. In his opinion, "the OSCE Minsk group failed to achieve positive results."
In this connection, Russia should reinforce its influence within this group, he said. "The conflicting sides, one of them being a victim and the other - an aggressor, cannot be fully responsible for the conflict settlement," the speaker stressed.
According to Murtuz Aleskerov, "the Minsk Group should make settlement proposals and Russia should back such initiatives."
The speaker pointed out that Azerbaijan strived for peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict. "We want the Caucasus to be peaceful and stable and observe the international law," Aleskerov emphasized.
He proposes "the restoration of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and the deployment of Armenian troops from the occupied Azeri territories." "Nagorny Karabakh should become Azerbaijan's autonomy and refugees should return to their native lands," the speaker added.
