AKAYEV VOLUNTARILY RESIGNED FROM APRIL 5

MOSCOW, April 4 (RIA Novosti) - Ousted Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev signed a voluntary resignation taking effect Tuesday.
"It was the only possible constitutional choice. An address to the Kyrgyz people was made, and an application for voluntary resignation was signed," representative of the Kyrgyz parliamentary delegation Kumanbek Amanaliyev told journalists.
According to the deputy, there were no mediators from Russia and Kazakhstan at the ceremony, Akayev's renunciation of the post and his signature were certified by a notary.
In his address, Akayev enumerated the country's achievements during his presidential rule. He asked for the Kyrgyz people's pardon and expressed the wish that the country be democratic, adviser to parliament speaker Bermet Bukasheva said.
According to Bukshaeva, Akayev paid great attention to relations with Russia, which he thinks should be a Kyrgyz priority.
Another deputy of Kyrgyzstan's parliament, Tashkul Kereksizov, said that Kyrgyzstan's parliament will accept Akayev's resignation Tuesday.
"Akayev's resignation will certainly be accepted because a new authority is already operating in the country," he said.
According to Kereksizov, the law stipulates that presidential elections be held within three months of a president's resignation. He confirmed that elections would be held June 26, the date set by the previous parliament.
Akayev told Kyrgyz parliament members that he is not going to struggle against the new Kyrgyz authority, "meaning the actual recognition of the authority now existing in Kyrgyzstan," Kereksizov said.
However, he noted that Akayev's promise was not written.
"Neither the protocol, nor the address to the nation contained it. But he stated this honestly and openly in conversation with us," Kereksizov said.
