MILITANT DETAINED IN CHECHNYA

GROZNY, April 1 (RIA Novosti) - A member of militant Abu al-Walid's gang was detained in the Novoterskoye settlement in Chechnya, the United Press Center of the Regional Operational Staff (ROSh) in charge of the counterterrorist operation in the North Caucasus.
"The detainee confessed that in 1999 he had undergone special terrorist training at the camp at Serzhen-Yurt of the Shali district, after which he was sent by Arab mercenaries to the Naur district of Chechnya," ROSh officials said.
According to the officials, the suspect is cooperating with investigators and has revealed some of the identities of other gang members, implicating them in concrete crimes.
A member of militant Israil Khachukayev's gang was detained in the Urus-Martan district, officials said.
"The investigation found out that he was a member of Khachukayev's bandit group and is implicated in attacks on Chechnya's inhabitants. In particular, in Grozny in autumn 2003 the detainee, forming part of a group, held up a driver in a Gazel automobile. A criminal case was launched into the matter," ROSh officials said.
Law enforcement bodies have begun searching for other gang members still at large, based on the suspect's information.
