PROBE INTO AKAYEV PROPERTY

RIA Novosti

BISHKEK, April 1 (RIA Novosti) - Kyrgyz law-enforcers are studying financial flows that the Akayev (former Kyrgyz president) clan managed, Daniyar Usenov, the vice premier, said Friday.

"The public has the right to know about the lawless deeds of the Akayev family. Today the National Security Service, the Prosecutor's Office and the Finance Ministry are all probing into the matter," Usenov told reporters.

"The questions like what sorts of flows and where they went are going to be clarified. He dealt in alcohol, petrol, television and mobile phone operation. The more we find out, the more shameful it seems," said Usenov.

At the same time, Daniyar Usenov stressed, "we are not going to deprive anybody of property rights without any legal basis."

"Akayev who is now on the run said he had nothing apart from a flat and an old car. Perhaps, it is true, but I know that his son and son-in-law had a fairly prosperous business in Kyrgyzstan. And its ownership led to conflicts with other businessmen."

As an example, he cited two companies (allegedly owned by the Akayevs) that had a monopoly on fuel deliveries for Manas airport. "Jet fuel net cost amounts to $250. These companies filled aircraft for $500 per tonne. It will not do. We intend to declare an open tender to change the situation," said the vice premier.

When asked about searching for Akayev accounts in foreign banks via Interpol, Usenov said, "I have not thought about it. Perhaps, it should be done. We will talk it over."
