JEBEL ALI, United Arab Emirates (NNS) -- The San Diego-based USS Bonhomme Richard (BHR) (LHD 6) made a five-day port visit to Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates, March 7-12.

The port visit came after the multipurpose amphibious assault ship offloaded most of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) for training exercises in Kuwait and operations in Iraq.

The port visit provided a much-deserved liberty break for BHR Sailors and Marines, said BHR Commanding Officer Capt. J. Scott Jones.

"BHR Sailors and Marines have been working diligently helping keep the peace in this region of the world," Jones said. "It was an excellent, well deserved port visit."

During their time in Jebel Ali, BHR crew members had the opportunity to visit many of the city's cultural sites, local markets and sandy desert dunes.

Many Sailors also participated in BHR's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) discounted ticket program for tours through Jebel Ali and the neighboring city of Dubai.

Local vendors set up shop and fast-food kiosks pierside, giving Sailors the opportunity to shop for souvenirs and grab a quick bite to eat.

Bonhomme Richard is currently conducting maritime support operations (MSO) in the Persian Gulf. MSO is aimed at setting the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment. Illicit activity at sea has a global impact. MSO pressurizes the maritime environment and is the single most significant component of the conventional maritime effort against terrorism.
