KYRGYZSTAN SUSPENDS COMMERCIAL BANKS ACTIVITIES

RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, March 25 (RIA Novosti) - In the period from March 25 through 28, operation of commercial banks and the stock exchange in Kyrgyzstan has been suspended, the news agency Kabar quotes head of the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan Ulan Sarbanov as saying.

He noted that "such actions are seen as lawful in the international practice in the event of instability in the country".

According to Sarbanov, the Kyrgyz stock exchange is rapidly developing and its suspended operation cannot threaten the national economy.

The head of the National Bank stressed that "all the commercial banks are ready to meet their obligations and this is why some of them are still making payments on their own initiative".

Sarbanov hopes that "beginning on March 28, commercial banks will resume normal activities".

"What is required now is additional checks of the reliability of the information systems as regards bank security and additional consultations with the security services", he said.
