PRESIDENT AKAYEV ORDERS INVESTIGATION OF ELECTION VIOLATIONS

RIA Novosti

BISHKEK, March 21. (RIA Novosti's Yulia Orlova) - President of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev has ordered Sulaiman Imanbayev, head of the country's Central Election Commission, to investigate election violations that have led to popular protests.

At the meeting with Mr. Imanbayev and chairman of the Kyrgyz Supreme Court Kurmanbek Osmonov, the President pointed to the need to quickly complete all judicial procedures related to the determining of the election's outcome, his press service reported.

"Some people do not agree with the outcome of the poll and use it to exercise pressure on the authorities. It has already come to illegal actions, mass protests, attacks on law-enforces who carry out their duty of ensuring law and order," Mr. Akayev said.

He recommended paying special attention to the districts where the outcome had caused a sharp response of the public.

"We should give an explanation to every high-profile case, making clear the results of the election and saying why candidates' complaints were accepted or rejected, in order to eliminate all speculations and accusations of prejudice," he said.

At the same time, the President said he believed that in an overwhelming majority of districts the election had been held in strict compliance with the law, as promised, and the outcome there was not doubted.

The parliamentary election in Kyrgyzstan was held in two rounds on February 27 and March 13. The total of about 400 candidates ran for 75 seats. Pro-government and neutral candidates won an absolute majority, up to 90%. The President's son and daughter also won seats. Supporters of defeated candidates, most of whom represent opposition, began mass protests to cancel the election's results, which led to insurgence in Osh and Dzhalal Abad.
