RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY ON EVENTS IN KYRGYZSTAN

RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, March 21 (RIA Novosti) - Political contradictions in Kyrgyzstan should be settled within the framework of the law and constitution, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Russia is concerned about the developments in southern Kyrgyzstan, the ministry stressed.

"Illegal actions lead to the aggravation of tensions, have a negative impact on the political situation and should be condemned," the Foreign Ministry warned.

Moscow expects international observers, including OSCE representatives who monitored the two rounds of the parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan, to display more responsibility in making their conclusions in order not to let destructive elements use these assessments to justify their illegal action, the ministry said.

"It is necessary to calm down the situation and not to give extremist forces a chance to make use of the unstable situation and threaten the democratic bases of Kyrgyzstan's statehood," the Foreign Ministry noted.

In the course of February 27 and March 13 parliamentary elections the majority of Kyrgyzstan's population came out for the preservation of peace and accord in the country and further socio-economic reforms. However, the opposition provoked disorders in some southern regions, above all the Osh and Jalal Abad regions. As a result, administrative buildings and the airport in Jalal Abad were seized. Some people suffered from these violent actions.
