Afghan Parliamentary Elections Proposed For September

15 March 2005 -- A joint Afghan-UN election commission has proposed holding Afghanistan's parliamentary elections in mid-September.

Commission Chairman Bismillah Bismil said today that the commission wants to hold off on the elections for another six months.

The parliamentary polls originally were to have been held in tandem with last year's presidential vote, itself repeatedly delayed by security and logistical problems. U.S.-backed candidate Hamid Karzai won that election in October.

More than 10.5 million people will be eligible to vote in the elections for a 249-seat lower house of parliament and provincial councils, and new voters are able to add their names to the voter register.
