First Horizon Frigate successfully launched

10 March 2005

On 10 March, the Forbin, the first Franco-Italian Horizon class anti-air warfare frigate was ceremonially launched at the DCN shipyard in Lorient.

The launch forms one of the major milestones in this ambitious project. All major machinery and platform systems are installed. Now the period starts in which the combat management system equipment, and AAW systems, including Thales' S1850M long range surveillance radar, will be put on board.

The Horizon frigates will be tasked to protect amphibious forces and naval strike groups against air attacks by fighter jets and missiles. The combat management system, built on the basis of a data transfer system, is capable of dealing with 1,000 threats simultaneously. The system makes use of ten computers: four for operational use, four redundant units and two for training and simulation. The first sea trials of the Forbin are scheduled for 2006 and handed over to the French Navy later that year.
