20% OF RUSSIANS DO NOT KNOW WHO MASKHADOV WAS

MOSCOW, March 10 (RIA Novosti) - About 20% of Russians do not know who Aslan Maskhadov was. These are the results of a nationwide poll of 1,500 Russians conducted by the Public Opinion foundation in 100 settlements of 44 regions, territories and republics of the Russian Federation two weeks before Maskhadov's death. Moreover, 600 Muscovites were polled. The statistical error does not exceed 3.6%.

People were asked an open question: who is Aslan Maskhadov?

About 18% of the polled said he was former Chechen president, 15% said he was a terrorist and 15% called him a terrorist warlord. According to 13% of Russians, Maskhadov is a bandit and criminal; 8% called him a militant and 6% - "some Chechen leader."

One percent of the polled consider him the leader of the Chechen opposition, a common Chechen or a former officer of the Russian army.

Another 1% of Russians characterized him positively saying that Aslan Maskhadov was a hero who fought for Chechnya's independence and defended his homeland.
