MOSCOW BAFFLED BY WARSAW'S REACTION TO MASKHADOV'S DEATH
RIA Novosti
MOSCOW, March 10 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Foreign Ministry says that a recent statement by a Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman calling the killing of Chechen terrorist leader Aslan Maskhadov "a mistake" has baffled Moscow.
"Moscow has received with incomprehension and perplexity the statement by Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Aleksander Szesko, who, as reported by news agencies, has called the destruction of one of the heads of terrorist groups in Chechnya Aslan Maskhadov 'not just a crime but political stupidity and a big mistake,'" according to the Press and Information Board of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"The question of whether Poland would regret the elimination of terrorist and killer Shamil Basayev, who is on the UN antiterrorist sanctions list, or Osama bin Laden, arises," the Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry noted that acts of terrorism in Beslan, Moscow and other Russian cities were carried out on Mr. Maskhadov's word.
"His hands are stained with the blood of thousands of Russian citizens, including children. If it is called Aslan Maskhadov's desire for political settlement in Chechnya, the Polish side has an obviously distorted idea of such processes, as well as the struggle against international terrorism in general," the ministry said.
