SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Sailors from Mobile Security Detachment (MSD) 32 returned to Naval Air Station North Island March 8 after their first major deployment abroad.
During their six-month deployment to U.S. 5th Fleet, the 80 Sailors of MSD 32 provided pierside security for U.S. merchant ships, as well as force protection assignments for the Navy's high-value assets.
"We provided antiterrorism/force protection and point defense for numerous combat logistic ships, submarines and P-3 aircraft in the 5th Fleet area," said Lt. Brian Flemming, MSD 32 officer in charge.
Flemming added that he could really count on his team of Sailors to handle any task assigned to them while deployed.
"I learned that these Sailors always have the best ideas and plans," he said. "They really know what they are doing. You just have to give them the opportunity to show it to you."
MSD 32 was commissioned in December 2003 and is a relatively new antiterrorism and force protection expeditionary force that was created in response to terrorist threats. The detachment is part of Mobile Security Squadron 3 and is part of the Naval Coastal Warfare community. The Sailors in this detachment report to the Maritime Force Protection Command.
Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Victoria Correa of MSD 32 said she learned a great deal from her first deployment.
"I learned to appreciate what we have [in the United States] in comparison to what they have over there," she said. "It made me feel really proud to be an American."
The mission may be over for MSD 32, but there are still new taskings and deployments that lie ahead for this team of Sailors. Flemming feels his Sailors are extremely capable and is very proud of them.
"I've got tremendously talented Sailors, and their 'can-do' attitude and 'refuse to lose' mentality made it so that there was certainly nothing we couldn't accomplish in the 5th Fleet area," Fleming said. "They get all the credit for this deployment."
