voanews.com Russia Says Chechen Separatist Leader Maskhadov Killed

08 March 2005

Russian security officials say Chechen separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov has been killed in the Russian breakaway republic. A military spokesman, General Ilya Shabalkin, told Russian media on Tuesday that Mr. Maskhadov was killed in the Chechen village of Tolstoi-Yurt.

Mr. Maskhadov was elected president of Chechnya in 1997 when the breakaway republic enjoyed a de-facto form of independence after Russian forces withdrew from the area following an agreement that halted two years of fighting.

He went into hiding in 1999 when Russia's then-prime minister Vladimir Putin sent thousands of troops back into Chechnya to reassert control over the republic.

Last year, Russia's Federal Security Service offered a $10 million reward for information leading to the capture or death of Mr. Maskhadov or of Shamil Basayev, another prominent Chechen separatist leader.
