SPECIAL MILITARY OPERATION UNDER WAY TO WIPE OUT BANDITS IN SOUTHERN CHECHNYA
GROZNY, March 7 (RIA Novosti) - Over the past two days, the Defense Ministry's special units have been carrying out a combat operation against the militants entrenched in Chechnya's Vedeno and Nozhai-Yurt districts, a well-informed source in the headquarters of the Joint Group of Forces in the North Caucasus told RIA Novosti.
"Ambushes have been set up along routes of the bandits' possible movement. Other measures have also been taken to block off and eliminate the militants," the source said.
He did not elaborate whether the operation has yielded any results yet, but pointed out that "so far everything has been going according to plan."
On Sunday, the same source told RIA Novosti that federal special forces were conducting an operation in southern Chechnya to eliminate a band of about 20 militants.
According to preliminary information, the band may include one of the Chechen separatists' leaders Aslan Maskhadov and his chief security officer Akhmed Avdorkhanov.
