Nepal extends detention of former PMs by two months

New Delhi, March 4, IRNA -- Ignoring international pressure to release all political prisoners, Nepal government has extended the house-arrest terms of six senior leaders of various parties, including two former prime ministers, by two months. Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala and Nepali Congress (Democratic) chief Sher Bahadur Deuba, both ex-prime ministers of the Himalayan Kingdom, had their internments extended, along with those of Nepal Communist Party, UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, its standing committee member Bharatmohan Adhikari, Peoples` Front Nepal Chairman Amik Shershan and NC (Democratic) central member Purna Bahadur Khadka, officials said Friday. Their house arrests had been due to end this week, but authorities extended them by two months. The royal government has already issued three-month detention orders to 450 leaders and activists detained after imposition of emergency rule after King Gyanendra took over reins on Feb 1. Security personnel Thursday arrested Nepali Congress Central Working Committees member, Baldev Sharma Majgaiya, from his house at Kapan. Six other party workers were also arrested from Ason for taking out peaceful demonstrations challenging the royal takeover. Nepali Congress` Ramechhap District President Ramchandra Khadka District Secretary Jhapatraj Bhandari and NC activist and Amnesty Nepal founder member Lokesh Dhakal were among those arrested from Ason as they took to the streets chanting slogans against the royal coup. 2160/2325/1432
