14 Maoists rebels killed by Nepalese troops
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
New Delhi, Feb 24, IRNA -- In the latest clashes in Nepal since the king imposed emergency in Nepal, 14 Maoist rebels were killed by Nepalese troops on Wednesday. The rebels were killed in several areas across this Himalayan nation, the Army said in a statement. Several guns and bombs also were seized, it said. Meanwhile, a member of the rebels` governing body, Kali Bahadur Malla, was detained on Sunday in the western Indian state of West Bengal. Nepalese rebels often take refuge in India even though Indian authorities in the past have detained and extradited at least three guerrilla leaders. King Gyanendra sacked an interim government, suspended civil liberties and declared emergency rule, saying he needed the boosted authority to fight the rebels. Foreign governments have denounced the moves as a setback for democracy. 2160-1/2322/1432
