RIA Novosti
GROZNY, February 22 (RIA Novosti) - Several Arab mercenaries were part of the bandit group that attacked federal soldiers in the Oktyabrsky district of Grozny, a spokesman of the Regional Operative Headquarters for controlling the Counter-Terrorist Operation in the North Caucasus (ROH) told RIA Novosti.
"According to preliminary data, federal troops eliminated several bandits in the course of a skirmish. One of the killed bandits was identified as an Arab mercenary," the ROH spokesman said.
Nine soldiers from a reconnaissance platoon of the 42nd brigade were killed and two were wounded in the Chechen capital on Monday.
Earlier, a military prosecutor from the Russian military contingent in the North Caucasus told RIA Novosti that the federal soldiers had died in the course of a firefight with bandits.
"Soldiers were killed by the debris of a collapsed wall, which served them as a temporary cover from enemy fire. The bandit group consisted of up to five people," the source revealed.
