EADS delivers advanced defence electronics to US Armed Forces

* EADS Defence Electronics key supplier of NATO data link subsystem
* Prerequisite for Network Centric Operations

Munich, 22 February 2005

EADS will supply the US Armed Forces with the Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) Low Volume Terminal (LVT) Radio Frequency power amplifier, a major component of the US MIDS Terminal. As reported by EADS on Tuesday, US-based ViaSat Inc. has awarded EADS Defence Electronics (DE) a contract worth more than € 40 million for the delivery of power amplifiers, with an option for € 20 million more.

Under the MIDS programme, the data link is being integrated in many US fighter jets and transport aircraft, ground vehicles and naval ships. It provides the capabilities for setting up a data communications network between a variety of military units, thus allowing networked operations to be carried out. MIDS enables a comprehensive situation picture to be established in near real time and improves the cooperation of multinational forces. EADS Defence Electronics was chosen as supplier in the face of strong competition from US companies, based on the outstanding precision and reliability of equipment previously supplied. Up to now, EADS DE has delivered more than 430 MIDS power amplifiers to the US market. In addition, EADS Defence Electronics is also part of the multinational EuroMIDS consortium which is responsible for the introduction of the MIDS data link system to NATO members Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

“The build-up of the MIDS data link system within NATO is a key prerequisite of network centric operations”, says Bernhard Gerwert, President and CEO of EADS Defence Electronics, “.With its longstanding experience in high frequency technology, EADS Defence Electronics is actively supporting its customers in the defence and security transformation process.”

In the European member states of EuroMIDS, fighter aircraft such as Eurofighter and Rafale, helicopters, ships and command posts are equipped with MIDS Terminals to establish a joint/combined data transfer network.

EADS Defence Electronics, supplier of radar, avionics and electronic warfare systems, is an integrated part of the EADS Defence and Security Systems Division (DS). DS, with revenues of about € 5.2 billion in 2003 and roughly 24,000 employees across nine nations, forms the defence pole within EADS. It offers integrated systems solutions to the new challenges confronting armed forces and homeland security units. It is active in the areas of military aircraft, missile systems, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems with manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), battlefield management systems, defence electronics, sensors and avionics, and related services.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2003, the Group generated revenues of over € 30 billion and employed a workforce of more than 109,000.
