India under no obligation to supply arms to Nepal: Mukherjee
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
New Delhi, Feb 16, IRNA -- India is under no contractual obligation to supply arms to Nepal and any request for weapons is considered only after taking into consideration the situation in the Himalayan kingdom, Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here. "It is not that we have a running contract with Nepal for arms supplies. The weapons requests are considered as and when they are needed," he told newsmen on the sidelines of a Navy function on Tuesday. Making it clear that New Delhi had not frozen its relationship with Kathmandu after the dismissal of the popular government there, he said the relationship was continuing even as India held the view that it supported democracy in the Himalayan kingdom under a constitutional monarchy. Pointing out that New Delhi had a special relationship with Kathmandu, Mukherjee said there was no confusion regarding arms supplies to that country. 2160/2321/1432
