BAE SYSTEMS Promotes Self Defence Weapon System Offering Armoured Vehicles And Crews Unprecedented Protection

13 Feb 2005

At the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX 2005) in Abu Dhabi next week, BAE Systems Avionics will be promoting its Remote Weapons Station capability fitted with a high performance Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Weapon Aiming Sight (STAWS).

This state of the art system enables vehicle crews to operate 24 hours a day and to defend themselves without having to leave the safety of the vehicles armoured cabin.

The UK MoD has already ordered 326 Remote Weapon Stations complete with the STAWS sensor for the UK Armys new Future Command and Liaison Vehicle Programme (FCLV). The first units were delivered and have been successfully integrated into the first FCLV Panther vehicle. This system will provide UK land forces with the most up to date self-defence weapon currently available.

Using BAE Systems world class uncooled thermal imaging technology combined with a high resolution daylight sensor, this unique system enables the user to carry out surveillance activities at long ranges without leaving the safety of the vehicle. This equipment can be fitted with an optional eye-safe laser rangefinder to provide full target acquisition capability.

Roy Pilkington, Head of Sales and Marketing said This capability enables surveillance teams to identify, target and defend themselves against enemy forces without leaving their vehicle. Its proven operational effectiveness makes it suitable for use in all weather conditions, 24 hour a day. We are delighted to be promoting this world leading technology at IDEX 2005
